THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF MENTAL HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR SENIORS

The Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health, with support from the Public Health Agency of Canada, led the development of 4 sets of national Guidelines for health professionals. They focused on Depression, Delirium, Suicide Prevention and Mental Health issues in Long-Term Care Homes. The Guidelines were widely disseminated, followed by a series of Implementation Projects. This presentation will describe the process of Guideline development and discuss the challenges of implementation, utilizing examples from the projects described above.

Dr. Conn is the Vice-President of Education at Baycrest and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto. He joined the Department of Psychiatry at Baycrest in 1983 and served as the Department Head from 1992 to 2010. He is the Co-Chair of the Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health, Chair of the Coalition’s National Guidelines Project and Past President of the Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry. He received the 2005 Canadian Academy of Geriatric Psychiatry Award for Outstanding Contributions to Geriatric Psychiatry in Canada and a Distinguished Service Award from the International Psychogeriatric Association in 2009.
